Inspirations on the Horizon: Rooms with nautical elements

Nautical elements have been found in design for ages, sailors brought home ship parts or trinkets as memorabilia of time spent at sea. These days designers covet the authentic nautical finds at salvage yards and antique stores. For the novice just trying to give their home a sea worthy feel, you can find replica items in many decor shops. Whether it is a simple seashell sitting a top your fireplace mantle or a porthole mirror in your foyer, you can't go wrong with adding a little nautical touch to your home.

This gorgeous fireplace surrounding created out of seashells is stunning with the brown paint color and white shells.

Inspirations on the Horizon: Coastal bedrooms

Coastal bedrooms have a common trait of clean whites and blues, they usually evoke a feeling of being by the water. Crisp white linens paired with light blues and breezy canopies draped over head are what created the essence of some of our favorite coastal room designs.

Light blue walls cast a darker blue shadow on the floor creating a glow. White bedding against the wicker nightstands gives great contrast, while the four post canopy bed draped in gauze reminds you of the islands.

Maritime coastal, this bedroom has more of a boathouse feel with the contrasting navy blue, framed shells, and wooden oars leaned to the wall.

A sense of spa like coastal retreat exudes from the room, floating like bed draped in white mosquito netting is soft and inviting. This room is simple and island chic.

Love the contrast between the whiteness of the room and the darkness of the west indies style wood pieces. This coastal bedroom is crisp and refreshing.

Lovely white four poster bed pops off the aqua tiled floor and gives the illusion of laying on the water. The warm wood tones really give depth to a more contemporary coastal bedroom.

Style Starboard: Texture is everywhere

Texture is everywhere!
We find Texture in our walls, floors and ceilings.
In furniture elements, fabrics, wall finishes, wood beams...It draws our attention in brick, stone and tile. It's present in the polished surfaces of mirrors, glass, counter tops and cabinets. Texture brings interest through a wicker chandelier, rattan chair and hand thrown pottery. Texture is at the heart of Interior Design materials and combining and layering contrasting textures is like adding that extra cup of sugar, pinch of salt, or splash of Tabasco that finishes a room with that "little something" that was missing.
